West Virginia remained part of Virginia until 1861. As was the case with Virginia, West Virginia was named in honor of Queen Elizabeth of England, who was often referred to as the "Virgin Queen."
West Virginia became a state on June 20, 1863. It was the 35th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from West Virginia are called "West Virginians."
