Missouri took its name from the Missouri River. The river was named for the Missouri Indians who lived along its banks. The name Missouri means "canoe haver."

Missouri became a state on August 10, 1821. It was the 24th state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Missouri are called "Missourians."
