The name Alaska is taken from an Aleut word that refers to an object to which the sea is directed. It is also sometimes loosely translated as "great land."

The United States purchased Alaska from Russia on March 30, 1867, for $7.2 million, or about 2 cents per acre. On January 3, 1959, Alaska became the 49th state in the Union.

It is said that in Alaska the family car has wings, vegetables and fruit grow twice their normal size, and moose interrupt gold games whenever they feel like it! What do you think?

People who live in Alaska or who come from Alaska are called Alaskans.
