Though Captain James Cook called the islands that he discovered in 1778 the Sandwich Islands in honor of the Earl of Sandwich, by 1819 King Kamehameha the first united the islands under his rule as the Kingdom of Hawaii. The name Hawaii comes from a combination of the words "Hawa" and "ii" which means "a small or new homeland."
Hawaii became a state on August 21, 1959. It was the 50th state to become part of the Union.
People who are native to Hawaii are called Hawaiians. People who live in Hawaii but are not natives, even if born in the state, are referred to as Hawaii residents.
