Wisconsin was named after the Wisconsin River. In the Chippewa language, Wisconsin means "grassy place."
Wisconsin became a state on May 29, 1848. It was the 30th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Wisconsin are called "Wisconsinites." More recently, in the sports world, they have also been referred to as "Cheese Heads."
