Connecticut was an established name in the 1600s referencing the Connecticut River. The word itself was translated from the Indian name "Quinnehtukqut" which means "beside the long tidal river."

Connecticut became a state on January 9, 1788. It was the 5th state admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Connecticut are called "Connecticuters." They are also sometimes referred to as "nutmeggers."
