The Indians and the state were both named after the Delaware River. The River was named after Sir Thomas West (Lord de la Warr) who was Virginia Company's first governor.
There is only one "first state" and Delaware is it! It became the first state of the Union on December 7, 1787.
People who live in or come from Delaware are referred to as "Delawareans," However, they are also sometimes called "Blue Hen's Chickens" and "Muskrats".
