Wasington, DC is the capital city of the United States. "DC" is an abbreviation for the District of Columbia. It was founded on July 16, 1790, as a federal district as specified by the US Constitution. The land forming the District came from Maryland and Viriginia.
The US Congress has the ultimate authority over the District, although it has delegated considerable authority to DC's municipal government.
Until the 23rd Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified on March 19, 1961, residents of DC were unable to vote for president. The District still does not have representation in Congress.
