It is not known how the name for this state originated. One theory suggests that the state was named by French colonists after the French province of Mayne. Another theory is that "Main" was a common term to describe a mainland.
Maine became a state on March 15, 1820. It was the 23rd state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Maine are called "Mainers." You might also hear them referred to as "Down Easters" because of the eastern longitudes of the state.
