This state was named after the Massachusetts Indians that lived in the Massachusetts Bay Region. Massachusetts means "large hill place."
Massachusetts became a state on February 6, 1788. It was the 6th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live or come from Massachusetts are called "Bay Staters." This was made official by the legislature on December 18, 1990.
