Captain John Mason received a grant for land in 1629. He named this land New Hampshire after the English county of Hampshire where he had enjoyed living for a number of years as a child.
New Hampshire became a state on June 21, 1788. It was the 9th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live or come from New Hampshire are called "New Hampshirites," "New Hampshiremen," and "New Hampshirewomen."
