This state was named by Dutch explorer Adrian Block. He named it "Roody Eylandt," meaning "red island," which referred to the red clay that lined the shore. The name was later anglicized when the region came under British rule.

Rhode Island became a state on May 29, 1790. It was the 13th state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Rhode Island are called "Rhode Islanders."
