Montana was created out of the Idaho Territory in 1864. Its name is a derivation of the Latin word "montaanus" which means "mountainous."

Montana became a state on November 8, 1889. It was the 41st state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Montana are called "Montanans."
