The origin of the name Oregon is not certain. One theory is that the name comes from the French Canadian word "ouragan" which means "storm" or "hurricane." Another suggestion is that the name came from the Spanish word "orejon" which means "big ear." Yet a third suggestion is that it comes from the Spanish word "oregano."

Oregan became a state on February 14, 1859. It was the 33rd state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Oregon are called "Oregonians."
