The Washington Territory, and subsequently Washington State, was named to honor the nation's first president, George Washington. The Washington Territory was established in 1853.
Washington became a state on November 11, 1889. It was the 42nd state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in and come from Washington are call "Washingtonians."
