Arkansas was named after the Quapaw Indians that lived west of the Mississippi River and north of the Arkansas River. The Algonkian-speaking Indians from the Ohio Valley called the Quapaws "Arkansas" meaning "south wind."
Arkansas became a state on June 15, 1836. It was the 25th state admitted to the Union.
The Arkansas General Assembly passed a resolution in 1881 stating that Arkansas would be pronounced Arkan"saw"; however, people who live in or come from Arkansas are referred to as Arkansans, pronounced Ar "kansans".
