Texas is derived from the Caddo Indian tribal language word "teysha" which means "hello friend."
Texas became a state on December 29, 1845. It was the 28th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Texas are referred to today as "Texans." In its early history, however, they were referred to as "Texians."
