Juan Ponce de Leon landed on the shores of northeast Florida in April 1513. He called the area "la Florida" in honor of Spain's Eastertime celebration of "Pascua Florida" (Feast of the Flowers).
Florida became a state on March 3, 1845. It was the 27th state to join the Union.
People who live in or come from Florida are called "Floridians."
