Georgia, the last of the original 13 British colonies, was named after England's King George II in 1733. The terms of the charter granted by the King specified that the colony to be founded by James Oglethorp be named after him; thus it was.
Georgia became a state on January 2, 1788. It was the 4th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live or come from Georgia are called Georgians, although through the years they have also been called Buzzards, Crackers, and Goober-grabbers!
