The state of Tennessee was named after the Little Tennessee River. The river was originally named "Tanasi" which was the name of two Cherokee Indian villages on its banks.
Tennessee became a state on June 1, 1796. It was the 16th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Tennessee are called "Tennesseans" or "Tennesseeians." However, Tennesseans have also been known as "Volunteers," "Big Benders," and even "Butternuts."
