Colorado's name is Spanish, meaning "red" in reference to the color of the Colorado River.
It became a territory soon after gold was discovered close to what is now Denver. Colorado became a state on August 1, 1876. It was the 38th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Colorado are called "Coloradans." However, sometimes they are also referred to as "Centennials" after the state's most common nickname.
