In the 1500s the Europeans named one of the state's waterways the Alabama River, after a southern Indian tribe that lived in what is now central Alabama. From the Alabama River, the name of the state was derived.

The Alabama Territory was created in 1918 when the US Congress passed the enabling act, allowing for the division of the Mississippi Territory. Alabama became a state on December 14, 1819. It was the 22nd state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in Alabama are called "Alabamians."
