The charter that Lord Baltimore received from King Charles I of England specified a name for this new colony. It was to be called Maryland to honor King Charles' wife Queen Henrietta Maria (Queen Mary).
Maryland became a state on April 28, 1788. It was the 7th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from Maryland are called "Marylanders."
