The name of this state came from the Minnesota River. The river was so named by the Dakota Sioux for the river's "cloudy" or "milky water," which is what the Dakota word "mnishota" means.
Minnesota became a state on May 11, 1858. It was the 32nd state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live or come from Minnesota are called "Minnesotans."
