Sir John Berkley and Sir George Carteret received a royal charter for a colony in the new land and named this colony for the island of Jersey in the English Channel. Carteret had been born on the island of Jersey and had spent several years as its Lieutenant Governor.
New Jersey became a state on December 18, 1787. It was the 3rd state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from New Jersey are called "New Jerseyites" or "New Jerseyans."
