New York was named by the British in 1664 to honor the Duke of York and Albany, the brother of England's King Charles II. New York became the name of the state and Albany was given to the name of the city, which became its capital.
New York became a state on July 26, 1788. It was the 11th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from New York are called "New Yorkers."
