North and South Dakota were one territory until 1889. Dakota was named for the Dakota, Sioux tribe that lived in the region. Dakota is the Sioux word for "friends" or "allies."
North Dakota became a state on November 2, 1889. It was the 39th state to be admitted to the Union.
People who live in or come from North Dakota are called "North Dakotans."
