The state of Ohio is named after the Ohio River. Ohio is the name that the Iroquois Indians used when referring to the river; it means "large" or "beautiful river."

Ohio became a state on March 1, 1803. It was the 17th state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in or come from Ohio are called "Ohioans." Sometimes they are also referred to as "Buckeyes."
