Oklahoma is a word that was made up by Native American missionary Allen Wright. He combined two Choctaw words, "ukla" meaning person and "huma" meaning red, thus forming the word that first appears in an 1866 Choctaw treaty. Oklahoma means "red person."

Oklahoma became a state on November 16, 1907. It was the 46th state to be admitted to the Union.

People who live in and come from Oklahoma are called "Oklahomans" or "Oklahomians." Quite often, however, they are referred to as "Sooners."
